Once in a while, a diamond unlike any other rears its head and roars. Not a tiny lion cub roar. A head of the pride kind of roar.
Shirley Temple was an American child star in her youth. Many are familiar with her for her appearance in Hollywood movies (Stand Up and Cheer was her breakout film) and TV shows, with her now ever famous signature song “Good Ship Lollypop” being introduced in the film Bright Eyes. After her retirement from Hollywood, she became very active in the Republican party in California and ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1967. She was eventually appointed by President Gerald Ford as the US Ambassador to Ghana and later by George H. W. Bush as the US Ambassador to Czechoslovakia. She died on February 10th 2014 at the age of 85, eventually succumbing to the emphysema that had plagued her for years (she was a life-long closeted smoker).
Prior to learning about its impending auction, I wasn’t familiar with the Shirley Temple Blue Diamond. But, oh boy. What a stone. The blue is an amazingly deep and intense color. Not like any blue diamond I’ve seen previously. And at 9.54cts and a VVS2 clarity (that’s pretty darn clear – they’re even saying it could potentially be internally flawless), this estate cushion cut is expected to fetch anywhere from $25,000,000 to $35,000,000 at auction on April 19th of this year.
