When you’re marrying a future Queen, all eyes are going to be on the engagement ring with which one proposes. So when Daniel Westling proposed to Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, the glitter crowd was definitely watching.
Thank goodness he went with something traditional by picking a diamond solitaire set in white gold, crafted by the official court jewelers of King Carl XVI Gustaf. Since their wedding, which I’ll get to in a minute, she has worn the solitaire with her wedding ring, a band of sparkling diamonds. If I were to guess, I’d have to say the solitaire is between two and three carats and no doubt of excellent quality. What I can’t tell is if it’s an antique stone or not (probably not).
My guess that’s it’s not a vintage diamond comes from the following: while the couple did follow some of the traditional Swedish standards for their wedding, they did made a few changes. The Crown Princess’ father walked her part way down the aisle, handing her over to her groom at that point, instead of at the top of the aisle. There was much debate about her request that her father “give her away” (as we would say here in the US). And Swedish tradition would have dictated that the bride and groom walk up to the alter by themselves. But in the end a compromise was found.
The wedding, on the 19th of June 2010, was declared “Europe’s biggest royal wedding since the Prince of Wales married Lady Diana Spencer in 1981.” And rightfully so. There were 1100 in attendance and the two weeks leading up to the wedding were declared Love Stockholm 2010 days. The evening before the wedding, the Parliament of Sweden honored the couple with a gala performance at the Stockholm Concert Hall, where the famous Swedish rock band Roxette was reunited (oh to be at that show.)!
And let’s chat about that gorgeous tiara that the bride wore in the wedding. She wore the Swedish cameo tiara, the same diadem that her mother, Queen Silvia, and her paternal aunts wore when they married. The tiara wasn’t the only royal headpiece at the wedding. On the morning of the wedding, the Crown of Sweden’s Heir Apparent and Prince Wilhelm’s Crown was removed from their showcases in the Treasury at the Royal Palace of Stockholm. They were placed on each side of the altar in the Cathedral.
