Since we were already on the subject of Dutch Royalty just yesterday, I thought we’d just stay right on track and discuss the gorgeous engagement ring that belongs to Queen Maxima of the Netherlands.

Married in 2002, then Prince Willem-Alexander proposed to Argentine born Maxima in 2001 but it caused quite an uproar. She was not a royal. She was from outside of Europe and her father had a bit of a reputation back in Argentina.

Educated in Argentina and then later (for her Master’s degree) in the US, the bride and the future king met in 1999 in Spain at the Seville Spring Fair. The prince introduced himself only as Alexander, not mentioning he was a royal, and one that would eventually ascend to the throne, no less.

They agreed to meet two weeks later in New York where Maxima was working at the time and their budding relationship began there. But it was a long haul before she would inherit the title Queen Maxima of The Netherlands.

As for that engagement ring? Do you have a guess? It features an oval orange diamond (orange is the color of The Netherlands), with bullet cut diamonds flanking each side. Maxima wears it between two diamond bands and her wedding ring. Because orange diamonds are so rare, it’s hard to find anyone that will put a real estimate to the cost of the ring, but it’s reported to be worth anywhere from $40,000 to $400,000.

What do you think of it Queen Maxima’s engagement ring? Would you wear an orange diamond if it meant you got to be Queen one day? Share your thoughts with me in the comments.

Oh HEAVENS Yes! But I am a “wild child” and would never end up a Queen! LOVE her bracelet too!
Sounds like you and I have a lot in common. And there are a few “grey” sheep that married into royalty, don’t forget. 😉
